Magnus Carlsen beat Hou Yifan to restore his one point lead with just two rounds to go. Carlsen played for only a small edge against the Petroff Defence and it looked like the women's number one would hold. Carlsen allowed a trade into a drawn King and Pawn endgame, firstly this wasn't necessary as the Queen endgame was close to equal and secondly Hou Yifan needed to find 45...a5 to secure the draw, instead after the trade 45...h5? led to a loss.

Shakhriyar Mamedyatov made Fabiano Caruana work for a draw after a dangerous exchange sacrifice on move 41. Ding Liren moved into third place alone after Evgeny Tomashevsky pushed a bit too hard for a win with white. There were missed chances for a win for David Navara against Loek van Wely and Michael Adams against Anish Giri. Adams missed a direct but difficult win with 23.Rd1 but was more cross with his 34.a4? which ended his winning chances. Wei Yi pushed for a win in a long game against Sergey Karjakin as did Wesley So against Pavel Eljanov.

In the B-Group Baskaran Adhiban hung on to a share of the lead with Aleksey Dreev after saving a lost endgame against Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu.
