The King's Tournament in Medias which is near Bazna in Romania had a lively first round. Vassily Ivanchuk's unusual treatment of the Averbakh Variation of the King's Indian with 7.f4 and the new 9.Bf3 clearly surprised Teimour Radjabov. After 20 moves black's position was a wreck and Ivanchuk brought home the full point. Magnus Carlsen got a very powerful position from the Queen's Gambit with Bf4 against Hikaru Nakamura and he had many roads to victory in the end. Sergey Karjakin equalised easily against Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu and was happy enough to repeat for a 20 move draw. Ivanchuk has white against Carlsen in Round 2.
