Leinier Dominguez Perez took the lead after the first round of the elite group of the 47th Capablanca Memorial. Dominguez didn't look to have many winning chances against Viktor Laznicka who had equalised at one point. However Laznicka never quite tied up the draw and fell into a snap mate on the run up to first time control but by the time of his error he probably only had one saving move. Favourite Vassily Ivanchuk played a heavyweight closed Slav against Vladimir Potkin which never really deviated from level. Yuniesky Quesada Perez against Ian Nepomniachtchi was a lively Sicilian Najdorf that finished in a repetition. Rd2 Saturday 5th May 2012. 3pm local time, 8pm BST. Ivanchuk-Dominguez, Potkin-Nepomniachtchi, Laznicka-Quesada.

Black should have secured the draw earlier, now it's tricky and he drops into mate.
