The first Breisacher Memorial in Biel will be settled with a four play playoff after Maxime Vachier-Lagrave finally managed to beat Liren Ding in 75 moves after getting a big advantage out of the opening (maybe 27.Bg4!?) Ding then had to hold on in an unpleasant double rook ending for a long time and whilst it will take some study surely had some decent saving chances once one set of rooks came off although the drawing margin was probably quite slim (71...Rd1 72.Rb5 Rh1 may be a starting point). Ding resigned a few moves later.

Etienne Bacrot hoped to get a small advantage to push for a win in a QGD Ragozin but Alexander Moiseenko drew very comfortably in 32 moves.

Ian Nepomniachtchi and Richard Rapport are the only two players not involved in playing off for the title on Friday and they completed the event with a draw in a French Winawer against each other. Rapport would probably have been better had he interpolated 18...Rxd1+ 19.Kxd1 Nd7 instead of playing Nd7 straight away. The game was then balanced and drawn in 55 moves.

Final Round 10 Standings: Bacrot, Vachier-Lagrave, Liren Ding and Moiseenko 14pts, Nepomniachtchi 10pts, Rapport 6pts.

Playoff is knockout on Friday starting 11am BST: Semi-Final 2x5m+2spm Bacrot-Moiseenko, Vachier-Lagrave-Liren Ding (Final 2x15m + 10spm).
