The 39th Dortmund Chess Meeting second round took place on Friday 22nd July. Kramnik has started quickly in his attempt to win his 10th Dortmund title with a second win, this time against young Georg Meier. Aggressive and risky play with black paid off for Kramnik. Ponomariov took advantage of some passive play from Giri to get back to 50%. Nakamura drew quickly against Le Quang Liem. Rd3 Saturday 2pm UK time. Pairs: Kramnik-Le, Giri-Meier, Nakamura-Ponomariov.

Vladimir Kramnik really went for Georg Meier the young German player who is by far the lowest rated player in the tournament. Not known for his risky play Kramnik complicated things from the start and quite riskily (29.Rxd4 looks good for white) and was rewarded with a quick win after Meier lost his way and played the immediately losing 31.Ne1 (31.e4) in a difficult but balanced position.

Ruslan Ponomariov recovered quickly from his round one loss by beating Anish Giri. It seemed at first the young Dutch player was doing well but he too eager for exchanges and white really took over the initiative once the queens came off and Giri had no answer at all.

Hikaru Nakamura quickly equalised on the black side of a Nimzo-Indian and agreed to a repetition on move 22 against Le Quang Liem.

Note that the organisers are delaying the broadcast of moves by 30 minutes each round to help against possible computer cheating.
