39th Chess Olympiad Khanty-Mansiysk 2010 (8)

No change at the top, Ukraine 1st, Russia 2nd

The 2-2 draw between Russia and Ukraine meant there wasn't a big change at the top of the standings of the Olympiad. Three rounds and a lot can still change but it is in Ukraine's hands.

There was deadlock between the Immovable Rock (Kramnik undefeated in 52 Olympiad games) and the Irresistible Force (Ivanchuk on 6/6 at this Olympiad) and a draw between the leaders Ukraine and second placed Russia I. This will no doubt suit Ukraine better. Sergey Karjakin beat Pavel Eljanov but Zahar Efimenko leveled things up.

There was a draw in the second match too with Reimour Radjabov beating Zoltan Almasi but Csaba Balogh equalised with a win against Gadir Guseinov.

Georgia moved 3rd with a narrow win over Belarus. Armenia got back in the mix with a win over Poland. The USA and China drew 2-2 with Hikaru Nakamura losing his second game in a row. France probably finished the chances of Russia medalling twice by beating the second team 2.5-1.5.

Lower down England drubbed a weakened Germany side 3.5-0.5 but the limits of their ambitions are surely to live up to their 12th seeding. Short was missing as he was campaigning in the failed Karpov FIDE Presidential campaign.

In my regular big beasts watch, Boris Gelfand beat Loek van Wely, Alexei Shirov beat Emanuel Berg, Magnus Carlsen ground down Diego Flores with black and Veselin Topalov couldn't beat Wesley So with white.

No stopping the Russian ladies who have a 3 point lead. Photo © 2010 Albran.
