The 19th Russian Team Championship took place 8th-16th April 2012. The event was not an 12 team all-play-all with a Premier Group and promotion group as before. Instead it was a 7 round swiss system sprint with 17 teams. ShSM-64, Moscow were the favourites with Caruana, Wang Hao, Leko, Giri etc (2725 average) ahead of Economist-SGSEU, Saratov (ave 2720) Morozevich, Tomashevsky, a returning Nepomnichtchi, Eljanov etc, St. Petersburg Chess Fed. (ave 2711) Svidler, Vitiugov etc and Tomsk - 400 (ave 2708) Karjkan, Ponomariov etc. Jakovenko, Shirov, Sutovsky, Sasikiran, (but oddly no Ivanchuk who usually plays these strong team events) also compete. The event was decided in the final round where leaders St Petersburg were held 3-3 by top seeds ShSM-64 Moscow allowing Tomsk - 400 to edge them out on tie-break.
